Difficulty Ranking from 1 (hardest) to 10 (easiest)
Crossings ranks 6th out of ten in difficulty. It sits right in the middle of the tracks, ranking 5th for both Concept Development and Composition.
The Ponte Vecchio, one of Florence’s most iconic landmarks, is far more than just a bridge. It’s a bustling marketplace, a historic marvel, and a silent witness to centuries of life in the city. With Crossings, I set out to capture the energy of this extraordinary structure as it shifts and evolves throughout the day.
Concept Development (5th of 10)
The inspiration for Crossings came from observing the Ponte Vecchio at different times of the day. Early morning brings a calm serenity, midday is alive with the hustle and bustle of visitors, and evening sees the bridge returning to a peaceful stillness.
If you were to chart the energy of the bridge over time, the resulting curve would resemble its own iconic shape—a perfect metaphor for the music. This concept—mapping the energy of the Ponte Vecchio across nine moments in the day—came together relatively quickly. Each moment builds upon the previous, peaking in intensity and complexity at the midpoint, much like the physical center of the bridge itself.
Composition (5th of 10)
To reflect the dynamic nature of the Ponte Vecchio, I built the piece around a series of layered musical ideas. Rather than composing entirely distinct sections for each moment, I chose to overlap and build upon existing themes, creating a sense of continuity and growth. The music becomes denser and more intricate as it approaches the midpoint, mirroring the crowding and vibrancy of the bridge at its busiest.
The centerpiece of the composition introduces a unique musical segment, symbolizing the character of the Ponte Vecchio when it’s fully packed with visitors. This moment stands apart, much like the bridge’s unparalleled role as both a thoroughfare and a marketplace.
Throughout the piece, a single repeated tone—representing the constant flow of the Arno River beneath the bridge—serves as an anchor. While this unchanging tone ties the piece together, it also introduced challenges. In some sections, maintaining the tone created moments of dissonance. To preserve the listener’s experience, I allowed myself to drop the tone briefly in places where the dissonance became too prominent.
Reflections on Crossings
This piece incorporates literal elements—the flowing water of the Arno and the shape of the bridge itself—as structural aids. While these elements are foundational, my ultimate goal was to convey my internal experience of the Ponte Vecchio. It’s a place that brings together history, humanity, and the rhythm of the natural world in a way that feels deeply alive.
For me, Crossings is a celebration of the bridge’s vibrancy and timelessness. Whether you’ve walked the Ponte Vecchio yourself or are encountering it through this music, I hope the piece evokes a sense of connection to its dynamic and enduring spirit.
