Difficulty Ranking from 1 (hardest) to 10 (easiest)
The Arno River is a constant presence in Florence, threading through the city’s history and daily life. Whether crossing its bridges or walking along its banks, I’ve often found myself captivated by its gentle ripples and the way it reflects the centuries-old cityscape. With Flowing Gently By, I sought to musically express the river’s quiet, persistent flow—a calming yet vital force that has endured for millennia.
Concept Development (9th of 10)
The concept for Flowing Gently By emerged naturally from my daily encounters with the Arno. Its slow, steady movement and the artful interaction with the historic architecture surrounding it served as my inspiration.
While the Arno has witnessed so much over the centuries, this piece isn’t about recounting the river’s role in Florence’s history. Instead, my goal was to reflect its gentle, rhythmic presence, its serene motion, and its constancy.
Composing the Piece (3rd of 10)
While the concept came easily, composing the piece presented its own challenges. Capturing the river’s motion—its undulating ripples and random patterns—was harder than expected. Initial rhythmic patterns in common time signatures like 3/4 or 6/8 felt too repetitive, missing the fluid and unpredictable quality of the Arno’s flow.
The breakthrough came when I turned to a 5/4 time signature, which allowed for a less predictable, more organic rhythmic pattern. This decision brought the piece to life, enabling it to reflect the river’s unique and captivating motion. Once this foundation was established, the rest of the composition came together smoothly.
Reflections on Flowing Gently By
One of the joys of composing this piece was finding ways to incorporate the structural elements of the Arno into the music. The river’s flow changes as it passes over two weirs in the city center, creating moments of cascading water. To reflect this, I introduced a quickly descending motif representing the weirs, paired with a key change to mirror the shift in the river’s levels. These touches anchor the piece in the real-world experience of the Arno while maintaining its emotional core.
I briefly considered a different approach, imagining the river as still and reflective. While there are moments when the Arno seems almost motionless, its true essence lies in its constant, gentle movement. I’m glad I stayed true to that vision, as it feels more honest to the experience of walking alongside the river.
Final Thoughts
Flowing Gently By may not be the most sophisticated, dramatic, or complex piece on the album, but it is my favorite to listen to. It places me right at the water’s edge, bearing witness to the Arno’s patience, ceaseless flow, and stunning beauty. I hope this piece invites listeners to slow down, reflect, and appreciate the constants in life that bring us peace—just as the Arno has done for centuries.
