The Rest Between Breaths was born during a time of deep personal transition. I had just set out to create an album that might bring calm and solace to those troubled by this turbulent world—when I found out my father had entered hospice. Leaving Italy to care for him at his home on the north coast of Washington, I continued to compose before, during, and after his passing.
What emerged was no longer about global healing. It became something much more personal, more intimate.
The album opens with “Dawning,” a piece about the profound recognition that life continues its rhythm beyond our short time here. There’s comfort in that cycle, in the certainty of light returning, especially in these moments.
“Papa’s Window” comes next. For several years, Dad had spent most of his hours in his chair in front of a large window, watching the changing skies, whirling birds, storms, and the wide waters of Puget Sound. This piece is about that view—and the joy Dad found watching it.
The final track, “The Rest Between Breaths,” offers an invitation to pause. It’s a piece about centering, stillness, and the quiet connection that becomes so treasured when there are no more words to speak.
Whatever troubles you may be facing, I sincerely hope that within this album you might find just a bit of respite.
